We received this message from Emily Roberts last night and had to share with you.
THE EMAIL WE’VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR!
(Drum roll please…)
I just received the call that Sultana’s request for humanitarian parole has been APPROVED (Sultana is still asleep and doesn’t even know yet)! It is only a 6 month parole, but her case worker seemed to think that it’d be easier for her to apply for something more permanent once she was here. Depending on how quickly the Embassy gets in touch with her (the info we have is that it should be pretty quickly), she could be here as early as next week. Really exciting stuff!
[Emily confirmed by phone that Sultana will arrive next week.]
She’s already been working on a class through ASU’s Global Freshman Academy on EdX, so she’ll have some credit when she gets there as well (thanks again to ASU for the full ride scholarship, room, and board!). For the next couple months, she’ll be with me in Iowa learning how to live in the States– buses and banks and leaving the house without a burqa (I can’t imagine it’ll take her long to get used to that one). Her journey here will be the first time since she was a child that she’s gone anywhere without another person with her.
A heartfelt THANK YOU! to you, who each played a role in making this possible. This wouldn’t have been possible without you.
Again, thank you!
I can’t wait to tell her.
