How we heard about Sultana

About a month ago, I received an email from Emily Roberts. She hoped Corridor Characters might share the story of her friend Sultana, who lives in Afghanistan.

Hmm, you may be thinking. Maybe not the best fit for Corridor Characters (which focuses on people in Eastern Iowa). But the subject of the email was titled “Sultana: Inspiring Iowan-to-be”. And then I read these words:

My friend, Sultana, is an Afghan Muslim student hoping to come to Iowa to attend the University. She’s overcome some amazing barriers to pursue education and her dream of becoming a physicist, including threats of kidnapping, rape, and acid burning.

IMG_5753How could I not read on, right? Emily also shared a link to a Go Fund Me campaign she created to help raise money for Sultana’s education. She wrote a summary of Sultana’s story on the site. I encourage you to read it here. After you read, I hope you’ll also consider making a donation.

After reading about Sultana and meeting with Emily, the team at Flow Media decided we’d like to follow and share Sultana’s Story as she fights to gain an education in Iowa that she was denied in her home country of Afghanistan.

This is our first installment: an introduction, really. We hope there will be many more to come, and we want to take you on the journey with us as we get to know–in Emily’s words–this “inspiring Iowan-to-be”.
